Google launches search removal tool after EU ‘Right to be forgotten’ ruling
Google has launched a new online search removal request tool via a submission form as it starts the lengthy process of executing the “right to be forgotten” rule following its recent loss in a landmark EU court case.
Individuals will now have the right to request “irrelevant, outdated or inappropriate” information about them or their company to be removed from Google’s search results.
Most individuals will view this move as a practical way to control certain negative, incorrect, information that has been published about them.
The online form requires detailed information about the content that you wish to have removed, along with a copy of a form of official identification such as a driving licence, to ensure that they are dealing with the individuals concerned.
An attorney or other selected representative can also put the case forward to Google on behalf of the individual.
Google has stressed that this is an entirely new concept for search engines and they will be working to strike a balance between allowing individuals the “right to be forgotten” and ensuring that the system does not remove stories that are in the public interest.
