Real authority, real links, real content, bring on Penguin 2.0…

Penguin 2.0Fingers and toes crossed. This week Google has launched a massive update to its Penguin web-spam algorithm, which promises to have a big impact on search results. So if you’ve now discovered that your website is no longer on page 1 of Google, you have probably been Penguined.

Voodoo Internet Marketing spotlight: Penguin 2.0

This Penguin update – being referred to as Penguin 2.0 – arrives a year after it was first released dedicated to identifying and stamp-out black hat web spam.

Penguin 2.0 will target sites which are deemed spammy by algorithmically enforcing Google’s quality guidelines, i.e. websites which had been over-optimised using Black Hat techniques.

Among others, Penguin 1.0 targeted sites which had been taking advantage of the common practice of adding/buying hundreds of questionable irrelevant or low-ranking backlinks to build page rank and ‘fool’ Google into thinking their sites were more popular and thus showing them further up the search results pages than perhaps they deserved.

On Wednesday (22 May) Google’s Matt Cutts revealed that the company had started rolling out the next generation of Penguin 2.0 and that the roll out was complete.

“It is a leap. It’s a brand new generation of algorithms. The previous iteration of Penguin would essentially only look at the homepage of a site. The newer generation of Penguin goes much deeper. It has a really big impact in certain small areas,” Cutts said, according to WebProNews.

Google’s Penguin 2.0 announcement has led to search engine optimisers worldwide quaking in their boots.

Highlights of what Google will target in terms of SEO for Google include (among others):

1. Advertorials – Google are trying to give less value to paid for articles (although how they will know what is paid for?)

2. Spam links – New more sophisticated link analysis to stamp out Black-Hat spam

3. Fewer clusters from one domain, especially deeper into the SERPs

4. Soften the grey areas of its Panda update

Cutts also suggested more useful features via Google Webmaster Tools.

Alfredo Bloy-Dawson head of Costa del Sol based Voodoo Internet Marketing said: “As usual Google are being vague, using terms such as quality content or compelling content when referring to what websites should have plenty of.”

“The way things are going it seems even White-Hat techniques are turning a little grey in Google’s eyes. We won’t know the true extent of how sites will be affected by Penguin 2.0 until it happens.”

He warned however, that if websites have been previously SEO’d using Black-Hat techniques – unknown to the site owners – these could get hit hard by Penguin 2.0 as this update goes much deeper into the website itself  “and by the time the disappear into search engine oblivion (page 4!) it could be too late,” Bloy.Dawson warned.

“If in doubt get someone who knows what they’re doing to take a good look at your site now before it’s too late, especially if you rely on your website for your business,” he added.
