WordPress, the content management system (CMS), now runs a quarter of all websites, according to the latest data from W3Techs.

Founded in 2003 WordPress started as a simple blogging system, it has quickly evolved into the largest self-hosting blogging tool in the world with features including plugin architecture, themes, widgets and templates.

In 2013 WordPress reached a huge milestone by claiming 20% of all website usage. In the last two years it has grown to gain another 5% of users making it way ahead of its competitors Joomla and Drupal, whose combined usage is a mere 4.9%.

“Sometimes it goes up and down through the course of a month, but it’s still a pretty fun milestone” WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg wrote on his blog.

And it is not only the most popular CMS title that WordPress can claim, it is also the fastest growing system; every 74 seconds a site within the top 10 million starts using WordPress; to put it into perspective look at the second fastest growing CMS, Shopify, who gains a new site every 22 minutes, according to the report.

Latest figures show that 37.3% of English language websites are using WordPress. In Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Turkey the figure is around 38% – 40%.

WordPress is dominating the market in Bengali and Bosnia where usage is 51.3% and 54.4% retrospectively.

The CMS is yet crack the Far East where currently only 10.6% of Chinese language sites are using the system and 6.9% in Korea.

In October 29.5% of new sites used WordPress, an indicator that further growth is imminent, says the report.

“The big opportunity is still the 57% of websites that don’t use any identifiable CMS yet, and that’s where I think there is still a ton of growth for us” Mullenweg concluded.
